In mid-2025, Australian ultrarunner Bianca Harding completed the Heart of the South 400 Miler, a self-supported 400+ mile race created by Lazarus Lake. She ran for over eight days wearing one pair of Creepers toe socks, putting them through one of the harshest real-world ultramarathon tests imaginable.

Eight days.
Over 400 miles.
One pair of socks.

No backup. No luxury. Just relentless forward motion across multiple states, through heat, humidity, storms, and total uncertainty.

If you have ever wondered what truly separates good gear from great gear, this is it.

The Heart of the South 400 Miler Explained

The Last Annual Heart of the South (HOTS) is a self-supported ultramarathon created by Gary Cantrell, better known as Lazarus Lake, the race director behind the Barkley Marathons. The race covers more than 400 miles and is designed to test endurance, navigation, and self-reliance over multiple days.

The race does not begin at the finish line. Instead, runners are bussed to a secret starting location hundreds of miles away and only learn where they are once they arrive. From there, they must navigate their way back on foot to the finish in Kimball, Tennessee, using maps and their own planning.

There is no traditional race support:

  • No course markings

  • No aid stations

  • No drop bags

  • No crew assistance

Athletes must source their own food, water, and shelter from gas stations, diners, and motels along the route. Runners are also required to maintain a minimum daily mileage and complete the full distance within a 10-day cutoff. Heat, humidity, sleep deprivation, and long stretches without services are expected parts of the challenge.

In mid-2025, Bianca Harding and her partner covered more than 400 miles in just over eight days, carrying what they needed and adapting continuously to the conditions.

As Bianca describes it:
“It wasn’t just a race. It was survival, self-discovery, and a relentless test of perseverance.”

One Pair of Socks. No Blisters.

Bianca started HOTS with two pairs of Creepers. On day two, after a severe storm, she left one pair behind to dry and never saw them again.

That left one pair of socks for the remaining six days.

Mid-race, she tried a cheap replacement to see if anything else would work. It didn’t.

“They didn’t come close to the comfort of Creepers so I stuck it out to the end with them. Still the most comfortable sock I have ever worn.”

Eight days. No blister blow-ups. No seam rub.

This is exactly why Our unique, superfine merino toe socks exist.

And that's why 10s of thousands of ultra runners choose toe socks to run in, including some of the best Ultra-endurance runners in the world.

Why do toe socks matter?

Toe socks help reduce blister risk in ultramarathons by separating the toes and limiting skin-on-skin friction. Over long distances and multi-day events, swelling and moisture increase friction between toes, which can lead to hot spots and blisters. Reducing that friction can make a meaningful difference when runners are on their feet for many hours at a time.

“For us, it was the most challenging and rewarding experience we’ve ever faced — over 400 miles on foot in just over 8 days, carrying all we needed, constantly adjusting to the unknown. It wasn’t just a race. It was survival, self-discovery, and a relentless test of perseverance.

Both my partner and I wear Creepers, I had 2 pairs at the start but unfortunately left a pair to dry on the 2nd day after a severe storm so had only one pair to get me through the rest of the race. I bought a cheap pair mid race to see if I could handle wearing some thing else but they didn't come close to the comfort of creepers so I stuck it out to the end with them.

Still the most comfortable sock I have ever worn.”

Why This Matters for Ultrarunners

Anyone can test socks on a Sunday long run. Very few people test them under sleep deprivation, soaked conditions, repeated friction, and eight straight days of movement.

HOTS strips everything back to essentials. When something fails, you feel it immediately.

Bianca’s experience reinforces what we design Creepers for in the first place. Long days. Wet feet. Swollen toes. Relentless mileage. If they work here, they work anywhere.
